The Irish singer has thanked fellow Muslims for their support on Twitter.

Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor has announced she has now converted to Islam.

Best known for her 1990 hit 'Nothing Compares 2 U', she said she had now changed her name to Shuhada' Davitt.

Speaking on Twitter, she said that her decision was "the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey".

She also uploaded a video of herself singing the adhan, or Islamic call to prayer.

The artist legally changed her name to Magda Davitt last year, and has been in the headlines regarding her religion in the past.

In 1992, she was met with huge controversy after ripping up a photograph of the Pope live on US TV. Seven years later, she was ordained by a breakaway church in Lourdes.

However, the Catholic Church, which does not allow women to be priests, did not approve the ceremony.
